CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES
CARNIVAL SPIRIT Carnival's 88,500-grt Carnival Spirit was the first of the "Spirit Class" ships, the longest in the fleet at 960 feet with the highest percentage of oceanview staterooms . Carnival Spirit has received the "Green Star" designation awarded to ships that meet the environmental standards established by the Registro Italiano Navale Group, an Italian ship classification and management system certification society. Spirit received the awards for Clean Sea and Clean Air. Built in Kavaerner Masa Yards in Finland, Spirit has segregated bilge spaces which minimize the possibility of tainting water with oil and isolated fuel tanks with "double hull-like" protection reducing the possibility of rupture in the event of a grounding. Carnival Spirit also runs the new Wartsila "smokeless" enviroengine, which reduces visible emissions and is expected to enhance fuel efficiency. Environmentally friendly refrigerants, paints and other products were used in her construction.
Carnival Spirit was the first Carnival ship to have an alternative restaurant, Nouveau Supper Club, which offers stone crabs from Miami Beach's famous restaurant, Joe's Stone Crab. When you board you'll find the representative from the restaurant in the foyer with sample menus and a platter of steaks and chops. Book early!! It is well worth the $20. service charge.
Sky deck 12 and Sports Deck 11 provide excellent observation areas while the retractable Sky Dome covers the Lido Deck pool area during inclement weather.
Expansive family-friendly facilities are found on board the Carnival Spirit. A 2,400 sq.ft. "Fun House" contains three sections; an arts and crafts center, computer lab and all-ages play area. As well, a techno Arcade and outdoor play area and four heated swimming and splashing areas are situated one deck below. Alaska themed activities are planned as part of the "Camp Carnival" children's and teen's program.
Carnival has expanded shore excursions to include both leisurely paced land tours and thrilling adventure excursions. Mountain Point Snorkeling at Ketchikan, Evening Whale Quest in Juneau, Semi-Submersible Sea Life Discovery in Sitka are three of the latest offerings.
Carnival Spirit sails between Vancouver and Whittier on Wednesdays, with several round-trip Vancouver sailings offered in May and September.
